Trojans look to stay hot against Stars in North Battleford

Nov 21, 2018 | 10:31 AM

The Tisdale Trojans look to stay hot tonight in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL).

Tisdale hits the road for a meeting with the Battlefords Stars at the North Battleford Civic Centre. It’s the third meeting of the season between the two teams. The Trojans took the first two meetings of the season on Oct 26 and 27 in Tisdale by scores of 4-2, and 4-0. Trojans Head Coach Darrell Mann said the Stars will be a different team this time around.

“They’ve won three in a row, they’ve just gone through a coaching change,” Mann said. “They actually have one of the guys that I coached when we won the National Title [in 2002], coaching [the Trojans], Brett Parker. I know they’re going to work hard and be excited to have him as their coach so we’re going to have to match their work ethic if we’re going to be successful.”

Battlefords beat the Saskatoon Blazers, Notre Dame Hounds, and Notre Dame Argos during their recent stretch. Parker was named head coach earlier this week after hold the assistant coach position with the Battlefords North Stars in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. For the Trojans, they have not lost in regulation since Oct. 20, winning six games, and losing twice in a shootout over that stretch. Mann said since a 5-1 loss to Beardys Blackhawks on Oct. 18, they’ve started playing better offensively.

“I think we’ve scored a few more goals,” Mann said. “To me that’s been a big thing. We’ve been winning some games 2-1, 3-2 and this weekend we were able to score nine goals. That’s something we’ve been working on in practice is getting a little bit more of a balanced attack, and I think we’ve really brought that to the table here.”

On the weekend, Tisdale grabbed a pair of wins from the Moose Jaw Generals by scores of 4-3, and 5-2. Heading into the game, the Trojans are all alone in second place in the SMAAAHL standings with a record of 12-2-2-1, while the Stars are in eleventh place at a record of 5-11-0-1.

Tonight’s game can be heard on CK750 with Winmar Tisdale Trojan Hockey getting underway at 7:15 p.m. with the pre-game show.
